Commercial Water Treatment in Sorrento Valley & La Jolla, CA
Labs, research campuses and hospitals in Sorrento Valley and La Jolla can't afford a cooling tower that scales up, an RO system that drifts out of spec or a Legionella result nobody can explain. The water coming in is hard, chloraminated and expensive. Hydrovida keeps that equipment clean and documented, from our headquarters up the coast in Carlsbad.

What's in the water here
Sorrento Valley, Torrey Pines and La Jolla get their water from the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department, which treats it at three plants: Alvarado, Miramar and Otay. The service areas overlap, so your building could get water from more than one.
In the city's 2025 water quality report, the three plants averaged 237 to 243 mg/L of hardness, roughly 14 grains per gallon, and 532 to 585 mg/L of total dissolved solids. That is very hard water. It builds scale on cooling tower fill, chiller and heat exchanger tubes and humidifiers, and it makes softeners and RO systems work hard. The city disinfects with chloramine, which damages RO membranes if it isn't removed first.
The supply is changing, too. The city's Pure Water San Diego program is finishing Phase 1, a 30-million-gallon-a-day purification plant in University City that will send purified water to Miramar for treatment, with first deliveries expected around the end of 2026 and full operation in 2027. When your source water changes, your treatment program should be checked against it.
Who we work with here
Torrey Pines Mesa and Sorrento Valley are the center of San Diego's life science cluster: biotech and pharmaceutical labs, independent research institutes, a major research university, and the hospitals and medical centers of La Jolla. These buildings run cooling towers around the clock for lab HVAC and process cooling, use RO and purified water for lab work, run boilers and humidification, and need Legionella control they can show an inspector or an accreditor.
How Hydrovida fixes it
For labs, we keep RO systems in spec with the right pretreatment, chloramine removal and antiscalant, and if membranes keep failing, our lab can autopsy one to find out exactly why. For cooling towers, we test your water and set cycles of concentration so you buy less water without building scale, with controllers and remote monitoring that catch problems between visits.
For hospitals, campuses and anyone with a cooling tower, we write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine Legionella testing, so your records are ready when someone asks. We also treat boilers and closed loops. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options where you need them.
Discharge rules and rebates
Wastewater here goes to the City of San Diego's Metro system. The city's federally approved Industrial Wastewater Control Program issues discharge permits, inspects sites and samples without notice, and Sorrento Valley and Torrey Pines are one of its permit areas. Labs and manufacturers with process discharge, RO reject or tower blowdown need to stay within their limits. We help you control what goes down the drain.
Water-saving upgrades like conductivity and pH controllers may qualify for water-agency rebates. We help you check what's currently available before you buy.

Questions
Can you support lab RO and purified water systems?
Yes. We handle pretreatment, chloramine removal, antiscalants and cleanings, and our lab can autopsy a failed membrane to find the root cause.
Will Pure Water San Diego change my water?
It's a new source for the city's Miramar system, starting around the end of 2026. We recommend testing your makeup water as the supply changes and adjusting your program if needed.
Do I need an industrial wastewater permit?
It depends on what you discharge. The City of San Diego's Industrial Wastewater Control Program decides that. We help you manage blowdown and process discharge so you stay within whatever limits apply.
