Clean cooling tower fill after a Hydrovida cleaning
North County San Diego · Carlsbad

Commercial Water Treatment in Carlsbad, CA

Carlsbad's tap water isn't one water. It's a blend of hard imported water and much softer desalinated seawater, and the mix shifts. If your cooling tower, boiler or RO system is set up for one and gets the other, you pay for it in scale, corrosion or water down the drain. Hydrovida is headquartered in Carlsbad, so we know this water, and we're minutes from your site, not hours.

What's in Carlsbad's water

Carlsbad Municipal Water District (CMWD) serves about 82% of the city. The southeastern part of town gets its water from Olivenhain Municipal Water District or Vallecitos Water District, so check your bill first. Your treatment program should start with the water you actually get.

CMWD buys all of its drinking water from the San Diego County Water Authority. That supply is a blend of Colorado River and Northern California water plus desalinated seawater from the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant on Carlsbad's coast. The plant makes about 50 million gallons a day, roughly 10% of the region's water, and CMWD reports that desalinated seawater was about 18% of its supply in 2025.

Here's why that matters for your equipment. The imported water is hard and high in dissolved minerals, while the desalinated water is far softer. When the blend shifts, a cooling tower controller running on a fixed setting can either scale up the tower or dump water you didn't need to dump. And soft, low-mineral water can be more aggressive toward copper and steel than most people expect. The water is also disinfected with chloramine, which damages RO membranes if pretreatment isn't right.

Who we work with in Carlsbad

Carlsbad's business parks are full of life science labs, tech companies and manufacturers whose cooling towers run all year to keep labs, clean spaces and process equipment at temperature. Resort hotels and golf properties run boilers for hot water and laundry, and towers for comfort cooling. Hospitals, clinics and schools need Legionella control they can document. We work across all of these, including existing customers here in North County.

How Hydrovida fixes it

We start by testing your makeup water and your system water, then set cycles of concentration, inhibitor and biocide for Carlsbad's changing supply, not a one-size-fits-all program. Controllers with remote monitoring let us see conductivity and chemical feed between visits, so a shift in the blend gets caught the day it happens.

For Legionella, we write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine testing, so you have inspection-ready records. For RO systems, we set chloramine removal and antiscalant for your feed water, and if membranes keep failing, our lab can autopsy one to find out exactly why. We also treat boilers, closed loops and softeners. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options where you need them.

Sewer limits, recycled water and rebates

Wastewater from most of Carlsbad goes to the Encina Water Pollution Control Facility, run by the Encina Wastewater Authority. Encina runs an industrial source control program that permits and monitors what businesses discharge. If your site has limits on blowdown, rinse water or process discharge, we help you stay within them.

Carlsbad also runs one of the region's larger recycled water systems, and CMWD supplies recycled water to more than 1,000 customers. If you're thinking about recycled water for a cooling tower or irrigation, we can tell you what that water will do to your equipment and how to treat it.

Water-saving upgrades like conductivity and pH controllers can qualify for rebates through your local water agency. We help you check what's available before you buy.

Questions

Questions

Are you actually based in Carlsbad?

Yes. Our headquarters and lab are at 6241 Yarrow Drive, Suite D, Carlsbad, CA 92011. Our San Diego technicians work out of the same office.

Which water district serves my Carlsbad facility?

Most of Carlsbad is served by Carlsbad Municipal Water District. Parts of the southeast are served by Olivenhain Municipal Water District or Vallecitos Water District. Your water bill will tell you, and we'll test your water either way.

Does desalinated water change how my cooling tower should be treated?

It can. Desalinated water is much softer than imported water, so as the blend changes, your cycles, inhibitor and corrosion control may need to change too. We monitor conductivity and adjust.
