What's in Anaheim's water

Anaheim Public Utilities serves the city with local groundwater from the Orange County Groundwater Basin, plus imported water treated at the city's own plant and water from the Metropolitan Water District. In 2025, the city says local groundwater served over 80% of its customers.

That groundwater is very hard. Anaheim's 2025 water quality report lists average groundwater hardness of 316 mg/L, or about 18 grains per gallon, with a range across sources of 162 to 431 mg/L. Imported water averaged about 235 mg/L. Water that hard scales tower fill, chiller tubes and heat exchangers quickly. It's also hard on boilers and kitchen and laundry equipment without good softening.

Who we work with in Anaheim

Anaheim's facilities include resorts and theme park operations, the convention center and sports and event venues, hotels, hospitals, and manufacturers in the Anaheim Canyon business park. Resorts, venues and hotels run large central plants with cooling towers, boilers and chilled water loops that have to run through peak crowds and summer heat. Hotels and hospitals need documented Legionella control. Plants run process cooling and RO. Event schedules and hotel occupancy swing cooling loads up and down, so treatment has to keep up with demand as well as the water. We already work with facilities across Southern California.

How Hydrovida fixes it

For cooling towers, we test your water, set inhibitor and antiscalant for Anaheim's hard groundwater and raise cycles safely, with controllers and remote monitoring between visits. When towers are already scaled, we clean them and keep them clean. For closed loops, we stop the corrosion and sludge that foul coils and wear out pumps. For boilers, we test, service or replace softeners and protect tubes.

For hotels, venues, hospitals and any site with a cooling tower, we write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine Legionella testing. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options available.

Rebates and discharge rules

Anaheim Public Utilities offers commercial water rebates through Metropolitan's SoCal Water$mart program, which lists rebates for cooling tower conductivity controllers and pH controllers. Rebates must be reserved before purchase and amounts can change, so we help you confirm eligibility first.

Industrial discharges in Anaheim fall under OC San's source control program, which issues Class I and Class II industrial wastewater discharge permits. We help you keep blowdown and process discharge within your limits.
