Commercial Water Treatment in El Centro, CA
El Centro sits in one of the hottest, hardest-working valleys in the country. Summer heat runs cooling towers, chillers and ice plants near their limits, and the Colorado River water here is loaded with minerals. Hydrovida serves many facilities across the Imperial Valley, and we know what this water does to equipment.

What's in El Centro's water
El Centro's water is Colorado River water delivered by the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) through the All-American Canal and the Central Main Canal. The city treats it at its own water plant, and IID tests the canal water every year for the valley's water systems.
By the time it reaches the valley, Colorado River water is hard and salty. Brawley, which draws from the same Central Main Canal, reported hardness of 330 mg/L and dissolved solids of 680 mg/L in its 2025 water quality report, with about 290 mg/L of sulfate. Water like that scales cooling tower fill, condensers, ice machines and hydrocooler heat exchangers quickly in desert heat. Towers often run at low cycles to stay ahead of the scale, which means buying and discharging far more water than they need to.
Who we work with in El Centro
El Centro is the commercial center of the Imperial Valley. Its facilities include produce packing sheds, coolers and cold storage, ice plants, food processors, hospitals and medical offices, government and school campuses, and retail and office buildings. Packing and cooling operations run hydrocoolers, vacuum coolers, refrigeration condensers and ice systems through harvest season. Hospitals and campuses run central plants with towers, boilers and closed loops.
How Hydrovida fixes it
For cooling towers and evaporative condensers, we test your water, pick inhibitors and antiscalants that can handle Colorado River water in desert heat, and raise cycles safely, with controllers and remote monitoring between visits. When fill or condensers are already scaled, we clean them and keep them clean. For hydrocooling and ice, we help keep heat exchangers clean and water sanitary, which protects product quality and food safety programs.
For boilers, we set up softening and treatment that protect tubes and cut fuel. For hospitals and any site with a cooling tower, we write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine Legionella testing. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options available.
Energy costs and discharge rules
Clean condensers and heat exchangers cut the power your chillers and refrigeration use, which counts in Imperial Valley summers.
El Centro's pretreatment program requires significant industrial users to get a wastewater discharge permit before discharging to the city's treatment plant, and to apply at least 90 days ahead. Higher cycles mean less blowdown, and we help you keep blowdown and wash water within your limits.

Questions
Why does El Centro's water scale equipment so fast?
El Centro uses Colorado River water from IID's canals. Brawley's 2025 report for the same canal shows hardness of 330 mg/L and dissolved solids of 680 mg/L. Desert heat speeds up scaling in towers, condensers and ice machines.
Do you work with produce coolers and ice plants?
Yes. We serve many facilities across the Imperial Valley, including hydrocooling, refrigeration condensers, ice systems and cooling towers.
Do I need a discharge permit in El Centro?
Significant industrial users need a city wastewater discharge permit and must apply at least 90 days before discharging. We help with the water treatment side.
