Industrial Water Treatment in Turlock, CA

Turlock's water changed in late 2023. For decades the city ran on wells. Now it blends groundwater with treated Tuolumne River water, and the mix isn't the same every month. Dairy, cheese, cold storage and food plants that set their boiler and cooling programs years ago may be treating water they no longer get. Hydrovida helps Turlock processors cut water, fuel and chemical costs and keep heat transfer surfaces clean.

What's in Turlock's water now

In November 2023 the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority (SRWA) began delivering treated Tuolumne River water from its new regional plant to Turlock and Ceres. The plant can make 15 million gallons a day, and 10 million of that is allocated to Turlock. The City of Turlock still runs 15 active wells and blends the two sources in its system.

The two waters are very different. In the city's 2025 water quality report, groundwater hardness averaged 89 ppm with a range of 26 to 154 ppm, and groundwater conductivity averaged 366 µS/cm. The SRWA river water came in at about 46 ppm alkalinity and 67 µS/cm conductivity, which is far softer and lower in minerals. When the blend shifts, a cooling tower or evaporative condenser controller set for well water can over-bleed on soft water or under-bleed on hard water, and corrosion and scale behave differently on each.

Who we work with in Turlock

Turlock is a food processing town, with milk and cheese plants, poultry and food processors, cold storage and freezer warehouses, and packaging plants. These sites run boilers for CIP and pasteurizing, ammonia refrigeration with evaporative condensers, cooling towers and large softening systems, often around the clock.

How Hydrovida fixes it

We start by testing what each site actually receives, both makeup and system water, then set inhibitor, cycles and controller setpoints that hold up as the well-and-river blend moves. For boilers, we test, service or replace softeners, manage condensate return and protect tubes to cut fuel and blowdown. For evaporative condensers and towers, we keep scale and biofilm off the coils and fill, add controllers and remote monitoring so problems are caught between visits, and clean equipment that's already fouled.

We write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine Legionella testing for any site with a cooling tower or evaporative condenser. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options available.

Wastewater and discharge

Food plants send a lot of water to the sewer through blowdown, softener regeneration and wash-down. Running more cycles, regenerating softeners on demand and reusing clean streams where it makes sense all reduce what you discharge. We'll show you which of those fit your plant.

Questions

Questions

Where does Turlock's water come from?

A blend of the city's own wells and treated Tuolumne River water from the Stanislaus Regional Water Authority, which began deliveries in November 2023.

Why would the new river water affect my equipment?

It's much softer and lower in minerals than Turlock groundwater. Programs tuned for well water can waste water or let corrosion and scale creep in when the blend changes.

Do you work with dairy and cheese plants?

Yes. We treat boilers, softeners, cooling towers and evaporative condensers for food and dairy processors, and we plan service around production.

What does a free water analysis include?

We test your makeup and system water, review your treatment, softeners, cycles and water bills, and show where you can save water, energy and chemicals. There is no cost and no obligation, and nothing changes until you agree.
