What's in San Jose's water

Most of San Jose is served by San Jose Water, which blends local groundwater, treated imported surface water from Valley Water, and local mountain surface water. Which source you get depends on your address and the season.

Those sources are very different. San Jose Water's 2025 water quality report lists average hardness of 288 mg/L, or about 17 grains per gallon, for groundwater, with a range of 175 to 451 mg/L. Treated Valley Water surface water averaged 99 mg/L and local mountain water averaged 151 mg/L. A tower can go from soft to very hard water in a matter of days, which can mean scale on one end and corrosion on the other if the program can't keep up.

Who we work with in San Jose

San Jose's facilities include data centers, semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, labs, hospitals and medical centers, universities, and large office and R&D campuses. Data centers and campuses run large cooling towers and chilled water loops. Fabs and labs depend on RO and high-purity water. Hospitals need documented Legionella control. We already work with facilities across California.

How Hydrovida fixes it

For cooling towers, we test your water, set inhibitor and cycles for San Jose's changing supply, and install controllers with remote monitoring so conductivity and feed adjust when the source changes. For data centers and critical cooling, that means fewer surprises and documented performance. For closed loops, we stop the corrosion and sludge that foul coils and wear out pumps.

For labs and fabs, we keep RO and pretreatment in spec, and our lab can autopsy a failed membrane to find the cause. For hospitals and any building with a cooling tower, we write and maintain ASHRAE 188 water management plans and run routine Legionella testing. Our chemistry is made by Hydrovida, with NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 certified chemistry options available.

Rebates and discharge rules

Valley Water's Water Efficient Technologies (WET) rebate program for commercial, industrial and institutional sites lists cooling tower efficiency upgrades among eligible projects. Projects must show measurable savings and be approved before you buy equipment. We help you measure your baseline and document the savings.

San José Environmental Services runs the pretreatment program for the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility and issues industrial wastewater discharge permits, with regular inspections and self-monitoring reports. We help you keep blowdown and process discharge within your limits.
